Emergency Repairs Needed On New St. Croix Crossing Bridge

WASHINGTON COUNTY, MN — Repairs to a storm sewer pipe on the Wisconsin bluff at the end of the new Highway 36 St. Croix River Crossing bridge will begin early Monday, Aug. 20. The storm sewer pipe on the bluff along the St. Croix River was damaged during a heavy rainstorm the week of June 23.

Following the incident, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation made temporary repairs until permanent repairs could be planned, designed and permitted.

During the work, the right, outside lane and shoulder of the eastbound bridge will be closed from the Minnesota-Wisconsin state line in the middle of the St. Croix River to Wisconsin State Highway 35 in the Town of St. Joseph.

The lane closure will allow placement of a crane on the bridge to make repairs from the top of the structure. A barge on the river also will be used during the repairs.

Bicycle and pedestrian traffic will be maintained across the bridge and on the loop trail throughout the work.

All work is expected to be completed by mid-September. While the storm sewer repairs are being carried out, crews will place rip-rap to repair the slope and restore the St. Croix River’s eastern shoreline.
