The Washington County Turtle Tunnel, a road crossing by Big Marine Regional Park, is a popular way for animals to cross the area safely.

The tunnel is overseen by the Washington County Conservation District. The government agency is able to capture photos of various critters crawling through the tunnel at all times of the day.

Volunteers frequently visit the tunnel in order to collect observational data of live and dead turtles and other species observed near the crossing.

Recently, the Minnesota Department of Transportation warned motorists that species of Minnesota wildlife, including turtles, are starting to migrate to their winter homes.

Drivers should be alert for these little guys on the road to keep themselves and the turtles safe.
