Stillwater Ice Castles to Close Due to Warm Weather
The ice castles in Stillwater will be closed to the public Thursday and may be closed the following week as well.
Due to the unseasonably warm weather, the Stillwater ice castles will be closed to the public Thursday, Jan. 19. Depending on the weather, the ice castles may be closed into the following week as well, the city of Stillwater announced on Facebook.
The anticipated "January thaw" is on track for the rest of the week with highs rising above freezing. Overnight lows may not fall below freezing by this weekend.
The ice castles are made entirely of ice, including the walking surface. The floor is composed of eight inches of crushed ice and snow. In exceptionally warm temperatures, the surface becomes wet and slushy and not enjoyable for the guests, according to a news release.
