Stillwater Motorcyclist Dies After Crash With Stolen Jeep: Report

Deputies said the driver of a stolen Jeep fled the accident scene and was captured after trying to run from the scene.

ST. CROIX COUNTY, WI — Authorities in St. Croix County say the driver of a stolen Jeep fled deputies into a local village, resulting in a traffic accident that led to the death of a Stillwater motorcyclist.

According to the St. Croix County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to a home on the 2000 block of Highway 64 in the Town of Star Prairie, Wis., on a report that a person stole a 2013 Jeep Liberty.

Sheriff's officials said the driver of the stolen vehicle had a "no-contact" order with the vehicle's owner, and should not have been on the property at the time he stole the Jeep. Authorities identified the driver as Brandon M. Lieffring, 37, of New Richmond.

According to the St. Croix County Sheriff's Office, deputies found Lieffring on Highway 65, just north of New Richmond. When deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, Lieffring fled deputies toward the Village of Deer Park.

Deputies said Lieffring entered the village when the accident happened. According to Sheriff's officials, there were several motorcycle riders making a left turn on to Main Street near North Street, when Lieffring collided with one of the motorcyclists.

Deputies said Lieffring fled the accident scene, and was captured by law enforcement after he tried running from the scene. Officials said life-saving measures were performed on the injured motorcyclist; however, the man died on the scene. On Sunday, authorities identified the name of the motorcyclist who died as Dustin E. Kalland, 39, of Stillwater.
