Drought conditions in Minnesota are causing water supply concerns and have increased the risks for wildfires this summer.

MINNEAPOLIS — Record heat and long stretches without rain in June have created severe drought conditions throughout the United States, including in Minnesota.

"Drought impacts are beginning to intensify in the Upper Midwest, including wildfire risk, water supply concerns for agriculture, municipalities, and landscaping, and crop stress due to a lack of soil moisture," reads an update from Drought.gov.

"Summer outlooks (June-August) are leaning slightly towards the potential for above-normal temperature. With this potential for extreme heat and the current water deficits, it is likely that drought conditions will persist throughout summer."

Due to the drought conditions, it's important for Minneapolis residents to conserve water.

Water grass or plants only if they need it.
Don't water on a fixed schedule or if rain is forecast.
Water during the coolest part of the day to avoid excess evaporation.
Let the water sink in slowly. If you apply too much too fast, most of it will run into the sewers.
If you wash your car, use a bucket for the wash water and run the hose only to rinse.
