Former Concord Mayor Gross Passes Away

Marty Gross died of a stroke on Tuesday, according to press reports.

CONCORD, NH - Former Concord Mayor Martin Gross has passed away, according to the New Hampshire Union Leader.

Gross was a three-term mayor of Concord, a local attorney at Sulloway & Hollis, and also a long-time planning board member. He also served in the Legislature’s Ethics Committee. Gross was also very political active in the Democrat Party.

In 2012, after moving out of the city and resigning from the planning board, the Concord City Council honored him. Mayor Jim Bouley stated at the time, “Martin Gross has earned the respect and confidence of his many friends and associates who have been privileged to know and work with him. He is also acknowledged for his determination and dedication which has benefited the city of Concord.”

A number of the state’s political establishment offered condolences to his family on Jan. 28, 2016, and noted his accomplishments.

“Tom and I were deeply saddened to learn today of the passing of a good friend, Marty Gross,” Gov. Maggie Hassan, D-Exeter. “Throughout his remarkable life, he was extraordinarily dedicated to helping all people, and he exemplified the spirit of service and collective problem-solving that makes the Granite State special. As a public servant, lawyer, philanthropist, loving family man and friend, he brought people together to improve the lives of others, and he will be deeply missed. Tom and I join all Granite Staters in sending our thoughts and prayers to his family and loved ones.”

U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-NH, agreed.

“Marty was an icon in the New Hampshire legal community, and was an important role model for many lawyers in our state,” she noted. “I enjoyed working with him during my tenure as Attorney General, and I deeply admired his commitment to promoting good, ethical government. I am very sad to hear the news of Marty’s passing, and my thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”

U.S. Rep. Ann McLane Kuster, D-NH, stated that she was saddened to hear of the loss of a dear friend and community leader.

“Martin was a premier lawyer and highly regarded political strategist for generations of New Hampshire politicians,” she said. “I am grateful for his wisdom, guidance and support over the past 40 years. My heart is with his wife Deirdre and his many, many friends.”

Senate President Chuck Morse, R-Salem, called Gross a longtime friend and colleague and that he was saddened to hear of his passing.

“I know I speak for many of us who have worked with Marty over the years who would agree that his dedication to the City of Concord, as well as the State of New Hampshire was unrivaled, having held countless positions in state and local government as well as in the private sector, and his loss will be deeply felt in our community,” he said. “On behalf of the New Hampshire Senate, I extend our sincerest condolences to Marty’s family, friends and loved ones.”

“I am deeply saddened at the news that Marty Gross has passed,” said state Sen. Lou D’Allesandro, D-Manchester, in a statement. “As I often say, life is all about relationships and Marty spent a lifetime developing relationships in order to better our great state. Having known Marty and his late wife Carolyn since the 1960s, New Hampshire has lost a great man and a dedicated public servant. Marty’s friends and family will be in my thoughts and prayers, as I’m sure they will be for all those whose lives Marty touched.”

New Hampshire Democratic Party Chairman Ray Buckley said Gross’ passing was a loss to the state and added that he was “exceptional citizen” and “a true New Hampshire icon who dedicated his life to making society better for all, putting his keen intellect and generous spirit to work for the improvement of our state at every level.”
