Girl Scouts To Be Honored at Red Cross 'Everyday Heroes' Ceremony On March 1
Girls Scouts from Auburn troop will be recognized for their work to replace the "buddy bench" they installed after it was vandalized.

CONCORD, NH — Five Girl Scouts from Auburn Troup 20001 will be honored at the American Red Cross chapter’s “Everyday Heroes” ceremony on March 1, 2017, at the Grappone Conference Center in Concord starting at 5:30 p.m. The ceremony is a fundraising event that celebrates local heroes, according to the website.
The Girl Scouts installed a “Buddy Bench” on a playground last fall, as a project to earn the Girl Scout Bronze Award. The bench provided a place for a child to go when they needed a friend, according to a press release. Shortly after the bench was installed, it was defaced.
“This amazing group of girls bought this bench to help kids who may feel left out, or didn’t have anyone to play with,” said Shannon Meaney, major gifts officer for the Red Cross of New Hampshire & Vermont, in a press release. “But just days after the bench was installed, it was horribly vandalized.”

The Girl Scouts decided to replace it with a stronger bench and a security camera. With the support of the community and a GoFundMe page, the girls raised more than $3,500. This allowed them to replace the bench, add security, and fund other projects.
“Instead of feeling defeated, they took it as an opportunity to rise above,” Meaney said.
