Multi-Vehicle Crash Reported On Interstate 393 In Concord: Watch

Update: 3 people taken to the hospital after an accident that kept I-393 closed for more than an hour on Tuesday.

CONCORD, NH — A collision between three vehicles on Interstate 393 west caused major traffic headaches for commuters while sending three people to the hospital on Tuesday.

Around 7:45 a.m., police and firefighters began receiving reports of an accident on I-393 with possible extrication needed. Fire dispatch requested a second ambulance and engine after finding three vehicles, two with major damage, blocking both lanes of the highway, just after the Exit 2 onramp. Later, Concord's third ambulance was requested to assist.

Police and New Hampshire State Troopers began re-routing traffic onto the Exit 2 offramp and later, moved vehicles in the opposite direction of the highway to get them cleared from the crash area — while also dealing with drivers accessing the breakdown lane illegally and attempting to get by the crash, too, according to scanner chatter.

Ambulances also had to access the crash scene by traveling the opposite way, driving east on the westbound side, entering at Exit 1.

Three people were taken to Concord Hospital with injuries while one driver appeared to be OK.

Both lanes of the westbound side were closed for more than an hour during the cleanup and rescue operations.

At 9:13 a.m., all the vehicles were cleared from the crash scene and the highway was reopened.

Around 8 a.m., a second crash was reported at Interstate 93 and South Main Street. Concord police dispatch and state police dispatch attempted to coordinate coverage for that crash, with both agencies busy dealing with the I-393 crash. A Bow ambulance sent to that crash for mutual aid. The accident was later determined to be minor and it was cleared later.

New Hampshire State Police are investigating the crash, according to Chief Sean Brown of the Concord Fire Department.
