The Unsinkable Barb Higgins

During nearly a year of hosting "Downtown Dialogues" on Concord's WKXL, I've had an opportunity to chat with scores of individuals who help to make up our community. Everyone from the Mayor to City Council members to business owners and those who help to make Concord an arts and entertainment destination as well as others who give the city a unique and defining flavor. We are very fortunate to live in such a richly diverse place and I've come to appreciate that all the more while doing this show.

One of those people is Barb Higgins who grew up in Concord, just a few blocks from where I lived, in the White Park area.

Barb's name is probably familiar to some Patch readers because of the blogs she has written for Patch in the past several years. In particular, a series of Blogs this year, discussing the enormous changes in her life since her twenty years of teaching and coaching of thousands, came to an abrupt halt.

Although something like what happened to Barb might impact  some in a negative way, causing bitterness and even crippling the ability to get up and go on, Barb has an amazing attitude and strength that others could learn from and even emulate. It's the same kind of attitude that made her such a beloved coach and teacher throughout the years.

Barb Higgins continues to teach in a slightly different forum, while continuing to provide her coaching skills through Running Camps and other forums, imparting her enthusiasm and undiminished optimism about the value of making a difference to one and all. Barb also ran for and won a seat on the School Board, unafraid of speaking out on behalf of making sure the best in education is available for those who seek it.

Recently Barb dropped by WKXL to chat with me on the air and her first visit was so well-received that she returned for a second time. I've a feeling she'll be making it a third in the not too distant future.

Below are the links to those two shows and I would urge everyone to listen in. Barb's philosophy of life and in dealing with devastating loss is something everyone can benefit from.
