What makes a film a classic?

We all have favorite films from our past - films that immediately conjure up a variety of emotions and feelings whenever we see them again or even think about them.

Who doesn't recall sobbing their eyes out the first time they saw "Old Yeller" or the sense of awe and wonder they experienced when Dorothy opened the door and stepped into the colorful world of Munchkinland in "The Wizard of Oz". Whether it's a drama, a western, a musical, a comedy or an epic, movies have a way of taking and re-taking us to another realm.

Concord has fortunately been a community that has always provided our residents with opportunities to revisit or discover for the first time, timeless pieces of celluloid that deserve a special place. Barry Steelman and Cinema 93 really started the trend back in the 80's when they regularly mixed newer commercial releases with revivals of everything from "Casablanca" to The Marx Brothers. Fortunately Red River Theatres has continued to intermingle Noir Classics, comedies and an endlessly fascinating collection of films that deserve to be seen.

In addition, the Concord Public Library runs a regular film series and people like the aforementioned Barry Steelman, Bob Pingree and yours truly, share our love of film and knowledge on a regular basis at Granite State College as part of their OLLI Classes.

What determines whether a film is a classic or not? Some may balk at "An American in Paris" while others may acclaim it as a classic of the genre.

This week on "Downtown Dialogues" my special guest was Michael Hadley, a film aficionado from Kansas who was visiting Concord as part of a whirlwind New England tour.

We talked about some of his and our favorite films - each one deserving of a viewing on TCM or a rental or purchase in order to make your film library all the more complete.

Michael's enthusiasm is second only to his knowledge about why a film deserves the title "Classic".
