3 Times Alex Trebek Mentioned Barnegat On 'Jeopardy!'

Alex Trebek is battling pancreatic cancer. Here are three moments from the show that will hold a special place in locals' hearts.

Alex Trebek announced Wednesday that he was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Trebek has hosted Jeopardy! since 1984, reciting countless clues for trivia buffs and giving shoutouts to plenty of local communities not used to getting mentions on national television.

In that time, Trebek has mentioned Barnegat three times (counting the bay as well). Barnegat has shown up in one clue, and two Barnegat residents have appeared on the show.

According to the archive, these two Barnegat residents appeared on Jeopardy!, including a one-time winner:

  • Mariann Buonadonna, a homemaker from Barnegat, New Jersey (appeared Dec. 19, 2006, earned $5,600).
  • Martha Rothman, a retired stockbroker from Barnegat, New Jersey (appeared Dec. 12 and 13, 2007, earned $34,801).

Trebek, 78, said on a video announcement that he plans to beat cancer and continue hosting.

"With the love and support of my family and friends, and with the help of your prayers also, I plan to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease," Trebek said.

The iconic host ended the video on a lighter note. Trebek said he has to beat cancer because his contract runs for three more years.
