High Risk Of Forest Fires Spreading Across NJ On Wednesday

The warning follows an 11,000-acre New Jersey that began last weekend.

MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. — The National Weather Service said all of New Jersey is at risk for "the potential of enhanced fire spread" Wednesday. The Red Flag Warning follows an 11,000-acre wildfire from Penn State Forest that began last weekend.

The warning runs from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. The gusty winds and dry air "will create conditions that may promote the rapid spread of wild fire," the NWS says.

The NWS warns of several conditions that may promote wildfires, such as:

  • Western winds from 15 to 25 mpg with gusts up to 40 mph
  • Relative humidity dropping into the 20 t0 30 percent range
  • Temperatures with highs in the 60s, with 50s in the Poconos and far northwest New Jersey

The organization warns that any fires that develop may quickly get out of control and become difficult to contain.

The wildfire that began Saturday became 100 percent contained, the NJ Forest Fire Service announced Monday morning. Officials believe the wild-fire was human-caused, but said Monday they do not know whether the fire began through arson or by accident.
