Barnegat Area Braces For Flooding Over Next Few Days

BARNEGAT, NJ — The first strong coastal storm of the season is expected to cause coastal flooding in the Barnegat, Manahawkin, Long Beach Island and nearby areas. The National Weather Service projects gusts up to 44 mph Thursday and Friday.

Coastal parts of Ocean County are under an advisory for minor tidal flooding from 4 p.m. Wednesday through 11 a.m. Thursday. One or 2 feet of inundation is possible in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.

The area will be under a more severe flood watch from Thursday afternoon through Friday. The forecast says it's possible the area will experience "moderate flooding," which means a greater risk of inundation to homes and buildings.

Tide projections in the Manahawkin-Ship Bottom area don't anticipate moderate flooding as of now, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. But you can check here for updates by zooming in and clicking on the area.

The NOAA lists the following tide projections for Barnegat Light on the bay side (times are approximate):

• 5 p.m. Wednesday: 4 feet on Mean Low Water Scale (minor flooding)
• 6 a.m. Thursday: 4.1 feet (minor)
• 6 p.m. Thursday: 5 feet (moderate)
• 7 a.m. Friday: 5.4 feet (moderate)
• 7 p.m. Friday: 5.4 feet (moderate)
• 7 a.m. Saturday: 4.8 feet (moderate)
