Driver With Suspended License Crashes Into Truck In Stafford

STAFFORD, NJ — A Pennsylvania man was driving with a suspended license in a crash that disrupted Tuesday evening traffic in Stafford, police said.

Stafford police said the crash happened on Route 72 at Mermaid Drive at 4 p.m.

David DeCant, 49, of Barrington was driving east in a commercial roll-off container truck on Route 72 and slowed down to make a left turn onto Mermaid Drive, police said. A Jeep Compass operated by Justin Dowling, 37, of Bensalem, Pennsylvania was also traveling east on Route 72 and crashed into the back of DeCant’s truck.

The Jeep Compass sustained heavy front end damage. Dowling, his passenger and two juveniles were airlifted to Jersey Shore Trauma Center for treatment, police said.

Dowling was found to be driving while under a period of license suspension and is currently pending charges, according to police.

Ptl. Justin Pascale and Ptl. Giovanni DeMarco are investigating the crash. They were assisted by Sgt. Griffin, MPO Sutter, Ptl. Haines, Ptl. Sherer, Ptl. Johnson, Ptl. Conner, Stafford Township Emergency Medical Services and Stafford Township Volunteer Fire Company #1.

Traffic was detoured during the investigation for about one hour. Any witnesses are asked to contact 609-597-1189, ext. 8436.
