LBI Surfing Event For Kids With Special Needs
Waves of Strength, a local nonprofit, is putting on its first-ever Special Needs Surfing Experience.
LONG BEACH TOWNSHIP, NJ — Waves of Strength believes in the power of the ocean and in "surf therapy." But some children face challenges that might prevent them from a conventional surf experience.
Waves of Strength wants to help. The Long Beach Island-based nonprofit is hosting the first-annual Special Needs Surf Experience at 9 a.m. Aug. 25 at the handicap-accessible 68th Street Beach in Long Beach Township. The event is designed around children 7 and older in the LBI area with special needs, a disability or underprivileged circumstances.
The organization believes in "surf therapy" and its "positive effects on cognitive and physical development, self-confidence and personal growth, as well as stress relief and socio-emotional well being for our younger generations," the nonprofit's website says. Waves of Strength seeks to help all children experience the sensation of riding a wave and enjoying the beach.

"Whether it be by commissioning a special needs surf board, overcoming a fear or seemingly impossible circumstance, our volunteers would like to make sure every child can have a go at riding a wave in their own way," the organization says.
