Mystic Subs To Bring Giant Sandwiches To New Manahawkin Eatery

Southern Ocean's Mystic Meat & Seafood Market is branching into a new restaurant opening soon.

MANAHAWKIN, NJ — Giants subs are coming to Manahawkin — from a name Southern Ocean residents might recognize.

Mystic Subs & More is set to open next month at 657 East Bay Ave. (Manahawkin Shoppes). The eatery is an offshoot of the Mystic Meat & Seafood Market, which originated on Mystic Island and recently opened a second location in Ship Bottom.

Mystic sells half subs that measure 10 inches long and whole subs at 20 inches, stacking the meat on each one.

Jay Zimmerman bought the franchise from Mystic Meat & Seafood Market owner Phil Tretola. Zimmerman has worked at about eight different restaurants in every position imaginable.

His experience includes Long Beach Island eateries such as the Harvey Cedars Shellfish Company and The Clam Bar.

"I was a customer of Phil’s," Zimmerman said. "We just got to talking one day about opportunity and all the businesses and restaurants we’ve been involved in in the past. The conversation just went on."

That's how Mystic Subs came about. Zimmerman hopes to open the restaurant April 1 and believes it will operate from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day.

Mystic Subs will also sell products such as wings, Italian hot dogs, cheese steaks and seven or eight breakfast sandwiches.

But the subs are the main attraction. Tretola has a connection up north, which allows them to get ingredients at a low price and put more on each sandwich.

"If you’ve ever had a sub anywhere else and then you’ve had a Mystic sub, there’s no comparison," Zimmerman said. "It’s four times the meat, four times the sub."
