Several Injured In Route 72 Crash In Manahawkin

MANAHAWKIN, NJ — Officials flew an adult and a child to the hospital after a crash Saturday afternoon on Route 72. Both were listed in stable condition, Stafford police said Saturday.

Police were dispatched at 3:47 p.m. Saturday around the Causeway Bridge for the three-vehicle crash. The driver of a 2012 Hyundai Sonata traveled west on Route 72 when his vehicle hit a 2015 Lexus, police said. The Sonata then crashed into the back of a 1999 Lincoln Town Car.

The Town Car spun multiple times before stopping in the right lane of Route 72. The driver had three other passengers, including an 8-year-old. The driver and child were both flown to the Jersey Shore Trauma Center.

After the crash, the Sonata continued off the roadway and across the pedestrian sidewalk and grass median. The vehicle came to rest in the middle of East Bay Avenue near the Mallard Island Yacht Club. Officials took the driver to Southern Ocean Medical Center for minor treatment.

The accident caused delays on the eastbound side of Route 72 and the Causeway Bridge, according to the Ocean County Sheriff's Office. Only one lane was open
