Southern Regional's Mike Gesicki Catches Dolphins' Winning TD

Mike Gesicki completed the season with 51 catches for 570 yards and five touchdowns, including three scores in the last two games.

FOXBOROUGH, MA — The Dolphins finished their season Sunday on a high note, thanks to Southern Regional alumnus Mike Gesicki. The tight end secured the game-winning touchdown pass from quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, helping the Dolphins defeat the Patriots, 27-24.

Fitzpatrick connected with Gesicki on a 5-yard completion with 24 seconds remaining to mount the comeback. The Dolphins (5-11) went 5-4 after losing their first seven games.

The Dolphins owe some of that improvement to Gesicki's production. The second-year pro scored his first-career touchdown Nov. 24 in a defeat to the Browns. He finished the season with five touchdown catches — three in the last two games — along with 51 receptions for 570 yards.

Gesicki's game-winner allowed the Dolphins to play spoiler for the Patriots, who snapped their nine-year streak of securing a bye week in the playoffs.

The Dolphins drafted Gesicki in the second round — 42nd overall — in 2018. He played four years at Penn State, recording 1,481 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns, including nine as a senior in 2017. Gesicki caught 129 passes, the most for a tight end in team history.

Gesicki was one of the nation's most highly touted tight end prospects at Southern Regional High School. He ended his career as the Rams' all-time leading receiver with 1,817 yards on 103 receptions, with 16 touchdown grabs.
