St. Mary Academy Students Top 3 in Cyber Robotics Coding Competition
Manahawkin – Nicholas Carerra and Sebastian Sares, both 7th grade students at St. Mary Academy placed 3rd in the Mid-Atlantic Region Cyber Robotics Coding Competition Finals. Their team, Dub Catchers, was among forty-two teams hailing from New Jersey, Connecticut, and Delaware and competed in the day long competition at NJIT.
“Nick and Sebastian are not only highly motivated coders, but they are disciplined students as well,” said Lizanne Coyne, St. Mary Academy Principal. “When they work with other students in our school, they help them all become better coders,” Coyne added.
St. Mary Academy had another team qualify for the finals. 7th graders Nicole and Adrianna Schirripa finished in 17th placing them in the top 50%. During the closing ceremony, Carerra, Sares, the Schirripa’s and their sister Julia were also recognized as five of only twenty of the Mid-Atlantic Finalist to have completed all 103 missions available, putting them in the competitions “100 Club”.
“During the past two months, thirty-nine St. Mary Academy students in grades 6-8 have been competing in the Mid-Atlantic Regions CoderZ competition that had 1,100 students participating in all,” explained Mr. Dennis Quinn, Computer Technology Teacher. “We are very proud of our students for their perseverance throughout the competition,” added Quinn. “This is an outstanding accomplishment and showed their commitment and passion for coding,” Quinn expressed.
