Stafford Home Catches Fire After Battery Explodes

A Stafford home on Atlantic Hills Boulevard caught fire early Monday morning after a lithium battery exploded in a bedroom, police said.

STAFFORD, NJ — A Stafford home caught fire early Monday morning after a lithium battery exploded in a bedroom, police said.

Stafford police responded to 140 Atlantic Hills Boulevard around 2:15 a.m. for a report of a house fire.

Police found smoke coming from the rear bedroom of the home. Residents were safely evacuated, police said.

Stafford Emergency Medical Services and the Stafford Township Fire Company responded to the scene. The fire was quickly extinguished, police said.

The Stafford Township Bureau of Fire Prevention and the Ocean County Fire Marshal investigated the scene.

Authorities found the cause of the fire was a lithium battery that exploded while it was being charged on a bedroom dresser, police said. The house was deemed inhabitable for the evening.
