BRCA Gene In Men Connected to Increased Prostate Cancer Risk
Genetics Affect Everything

If your mom or sister had breast or ovarian cancer could that mean something to you? For a woman BRCA and its variants could lead to an 80% increased risk of breast cancer in her lifetime and now there are several other genes that are recognized as contributing risk.
As importantly, for a male, carrying BRCA could increase risk too, possibly up to 15% in your lifetime for prostate cancer. Sometimes there may already be a family history of prostate cancer raising male awareness, and genetic testing should now be considered as part of personalized active surveillance today and in the future.
For the man with prostate cancer, a BRCA variant could contribute to more aggressive disease and should be considered in the formulas used to determine survival risk and therefore treatment strategies, along with biopsy and tumor molecular evaluation for somatic mutations.
