NJ Transit Train Hits, Kills Driver In Atlantic County

HAMMONTON, NJ — A woman died Thursday in Hammonton after a New Jersey Transit train struck her vehicle, NJ Transit officials told Patch on Monday. Authorities identified the person as Dorothy Burkett, 26, of Hammonton.

The crash occurred just after 3 p.m. Thursday. Atlantic City Rail Line train 4628 left Atlantic City at 2:40 p.m. and was set to arrive in Philadelphia at 4:21 p.m.

About 23 customers and crew occupied the train, none of whom were injured.

"While the incident remains under investigation, preliminary results indicate that the gates were working as intended," said NJ Transit spokesperson Jim Smith.

The NJ Transit Police Department is leading the investigation.
