Truck Blows Red Light, Lands On Car On NJ Highway: Police

A dump truck blew a red light and landed on top of a car, closing a New Jersey highway on Thursday, police said.

NEW JERSEY – A dump truck blew a red light and landed on top of a car, closing a New Jersey highway on Thursday, police said.

William Kovacs, 60, of Mays Landing, who was driving the car, was airlifted to Atlanticare for serious injuries, police said.

The crash happened at approximately 1:13 p.m. when officers from the Hamilton Township Police Department responded to the intersection of the Black Horse Pike and Weymouth Road, police said.

An investigation revealed that a 2007 Mack Dump Truck driven by Brent Hannold Jr., 37, of Vineland was traveling west on the Black Horse Pike when he failed to yield to the red signal at the intersection of Weymouth Road, police said.

A 2003 Honda Accord driven by Kovacs was entering the intersection traveling north on Weymouth Road. Hannold swerved attempting to avoid Kovacs’ vehicle, causing the dump truck to overturn onto Kovacs’ Honda, police said.

Hannold was transported to Atlanticare for non-life threatening injuries.

The accident is currently under investigation.

Assisting at the scene were the New Jersey State Police, Hamilton Rescue Squad, Atlanticare Paramedics, Mays Landing, Mizpah, Weymouth and Laureldale Fire companies, SouthSTAR, NJ State Department of Transportation.

Traffic was diverted for approximately five hours.
