Driver Escapes After Crashing Van Into Water In Hillsborough

Hillsborough firefighters pulled a minivan out of the water that had crashed into a retention basin in the Lowe's lot on Friday night.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — A Princeton driver was able to escape after crashing his minivan into a retention basin in Hillsborough on Friday night.

Just before 9 p.m., Richard Davitt of Princeton crashed his minivan into the retention basin in the Lowe's Home Improvement parking lot.

Davitt did not need to be rescued as he was able to get out of the van after it came to rest in the basin. Davin then walked to a local business and reported the crash, said Hillsborough Police Lt. Mark Szymanski.

Hillsborough Station 37 Fire and Station 38 Water Rescues helped to pull the van out of the water.

Davitt suffered a cut to the forehead as a result of the crash and was taken to Robert Wood Johnson New Brunswick Hospital for treatment, said Szymanski.

The cause of the crash was driver inattention (non-DWI), said Szymanski.

Helping Hillsborough Station 37 and 38 were Hillsborough Police, Hillsborough Township Office of Emergency Management, and RWJ EMS.

Station 37 is currently operating at the motor vehicle into the retention basin adjacent to the Lowe’s parking lot. All occupants were out of the vehicle prior to arrival.
