Hillsborough Driver Escapes Fiery Crash On River Road: Video

The driver veered off the right side of River Road and hit a utility pole before the car caught on fire Sunday night, police said.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — A Hillsborough driver was able to escape a fiery crash after colliding with a utility pole on Sunday night. (See the video below)

At 8:36 p.m., Hamna Masood of Hillsborough was driving west on River Road when she veered off the right side of the road about a quarter of a mile east of Roycefield Road and hit a utility pole, said Hillsborough Police Cpl. Craig Heindrichs.

The car then caught on fire. Masood was able to get out, said Heindrichs.

Masood complained of a minor hand injury and was checked out on the scene but refused any medical treatment, said Heindrichs.

The fire was extinguished by Hillsborough Fire Companies 36 and 37. Along with the fire companies, Hillsborough Police, Hillsborough OEM, Robert Wood Johnson EMS, Somerset County Department of Public Works, and PSE&G also came out.

The road was closed for several hours for work on the utility pole. Police sent out an alert at 6 a.m. Monday saying the road had reopened.
