Hillsborough Sunnymead School To Expand Parking Lot

The Hillsborough Planning Board unanimously approved the plan to expand the lot from 64 parking spaces to 120.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Hillsborough Sunnymead Elementary School will be essentially doubling the size of its parking lot following a vote by the planning board on Thursday.

The planning board voted to unanimously approve the application by the Hillsborough Township Board of Education to expand and redesign the existing parking lot; add a second drop-off loop; increase site lighting; and improve the existing stormwater facility.

"By separating traffic and increasing parking capacity, the project will improve traffic and pedestrian safety," said Sean Walsh, PE of Van Cleef Engineering Associates.

The parking lot will be expanded from 64 to 120 parking spaces, adding another row of parking above the current lot near Sunnymeade Road.

In total the project will have 21,000 square feet of pavement, said Walsh during the meeting.

Lighting will also be improved at the site with an additional 19 LED lights. A total of four trees will be removed as a result of the expansion but the planning board requested additional landscaping be replaced.

In the new design, access will no longer be granted to the back lot and in turn, will eliminate the 10 parking spots there. The lot will then be converted to be used for recreational use by students only.

Anthony Delucca, BOE Head of Buildings and Grounds, said the purpose of eliminating access to the back lot was to separate traffic from children playing.
