Hillsborough's First Female Firefighter Dies at 83

Hillsborough, NJ -- Doris Flatley Hillsborough's first female officer died at 83 on Thursday, March 17.

Flatley had been a member of Station 37 for 35 years since 1983 and was a life member of the department.

"It with deep sadness Hillsborough Fire Company #2 announces the death of life member Doris Flatley," Station 37 posted on Facebook.

A funeral service will be Tuesday, March 22 at 10 a.m. in Hillsborough Funeral Home, 796 US Hwy 206, Hillsborough. Burial will follow in Neshanic Cemetery.

Visiting for family and friends will be Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Flatley's obituary:

Doris Winifred Flatley, 83 died on Thursday March 17, 2016. She was born and raised in Newark, NJ she has lived in Hillsborough for 40 years.

Doris worked as an electro chemical engineer for RCA in Princeton for many years.

She was Hillsborough Township's first female firefighter and has been a member of Station 37 for 35 years where she was a former vice president and chairperson of the membership and bylaw committees.

Doris was a key member of the Somerset County Fire Academy building committee. She was also a former academy instructor.

In her free time, she enjoyed collecting Madam Alexander Dolls and firematic devices, taking cruises, cooking and fine wines.

She was predeceased by her parents James and Lillian Flatley, her brother James and her niece Maureen.

Surviving are her husband, Donald Scher, her son Marc Scher of Hillsborough, her daughter Cheryl Scher of South River, her grandchildren Brian and Alexa Scher and her nephew Brian Flatley.
