Iron Peak Sports & Events Launches Travel Basketball Program

Iron Peak Sports & Events, New Jersey’s newest state-of-the-art sports and family entertainment facility, is thrilled to announce the launch of its new basketball program. The Yeti will consist of boys and girls teams across various age groups, and will operate at travel and AAU levels. The program will bolster self confidence, foster mental, emotional, and moral growth, bring an athlete-centric focus to skill development, and promote a team success mentality throughout the club.

“We are perfectly positioned to offer athletes a full-service club right in their own backyard.” Iron Peak General Manager Sandra Weingart said. “Our Yeti basketball program is rooted in player development, and is structured to promote a healthy competitive environment where ‘individual success equals team success.’ Not only will we commit our strategy to operating a full trajectory model for player development, but we will also provide a trifecta of success including a top-tier game space, excellent coaching, and a required Speed/Agility/Quickness (SAQ) sports performance and injury prevention component that is missing from so many other programs.”

Iron Peak Sports & Events boasts four brand new, state-of-the-art maple basketball courts on which the Iron Peak Yeti will practice and play. In addition to the court space and SAQ training, Yeti athletes will have access to cross-training and team building exercises on the CLIFFHANGER Ninja Course, Climbing Walls, and Aerial Ropes Course.

“The Yeti program is not just about young athletes becoming better on the court,” Iron Peak Sports Director Dave McGillivary said. “It is the goal of Iron Peak Yeti to foster development across all facets of a player’s character. We will host events throughout the year aiming to guide our athletes on the path to academic, athletic, and personal success.”

Overseeing the Yeti basketball program is Scott Kallens, Head Basketball Coach at Hillsborough High School and former collegiate player at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Coach Kallens brings his vast experience in coaching and teaching to Iron Peak and will be instrumental in the direction, curriculum, and player selection for the program. He has been coaching basketball for over 16 years at all levels and has led the Hillsborough Varsity team since 2017. In three seasons as Head Coach, the Hillsborough Boys Basketball team has made the state tournament twice and has also been competitive in a very strong Somerset County.

Since graduating with his Master’s degree in Education in 2004, Coach Kallens has spent his career teaching, both on and off the court. In 2018, he received an Excellence in Teaching award from his alma mater and in 2019 he was named a finalist for Princeton University’s Excellence in Social Studies Teaching award (the results are still pending due to the COVID-related shutdown). He also strongly believes in developing community leaders and has designed and led a service-learning class that empowers students to effect positive change within their community while also engaging in challenging conversations about social justice.

The Iron Peak Yeti will be holding their first tryouts this February at Iron Peak Sports & Events. The club has its sights set on a strong start to their inaugural season and the opportunity showcase its athlete centric development methodology from day one.
