11 Measles Cases In 2019 Ocean County Outbreak, State Says

The outbreak was declared on March 15; a Lacey Township child is suspected of having them, school officials said Monday.

Two more cases of measles have been confirmed in the current outbreak of the virus in Ocean and Monmouth counties, the state Department of Health announced. And on Monday afternoon, Lacey Township school officials announced a suspected case is under investigation in the township.

As of April 5, there are seven measles cases confirmed in Ocean County and four in Monmouth County, the state said. The four Monmouth cases are in one household and have a direct link to the Ocean County cases, the state said. A total of 13 measles cases have been confirmed in New Jersey since February, including lone cases in Bergen and Essex counties that are not related to the Ocean County outbreak.

These cases, in addition to 1 highly suspect case, potentially exposed others to the infection between March 9 and March 14.

State health officials say they are working with local health officials to identify and notify people who might have been exposed during the time the individuals were infectious. Anyone who visited any of the locations listed above during the specified dates/times should contact a health provider immediately to discuss potential exposure and risk of developing the illness. If you have been exposed, you are at risk if you have not been vaccinated or have not had measles.

Individuals potentially exposed, if infected, could develop symptoms as late as April 24, health officials said.

An outbreak from late October through mid-January sickened 33 people, and more than 12,400 doses of vaccine were administered during the outbreak. Read more: 33 Measles Cases As Ocean County Outbreak Spikes

Anyone who suspects an exposure is urged to call a health care provider before going to a medical office or emergency department. Special arrangements can be made for evaluation while also protecting other patients and medical staff from possible infection.
