Teen Killed, 2 Hurt As Speeding Car Flips, Hits House In Lakewood

Lakewood School District officials are providing crisis counseling; authorities say the driver lost control trying to avoid another vehicle.

LAKEWOOD, NJ — A teenager was thrown from a car and killed when the speeding car flipped and hit a house in Lakewood on Monday night, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said Tuesday.

Two other teenagers were hurt in the crash at Cedar Bridge Avenue and Clover Street that happened about 9:30 p.m. Monday, Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said.

Authorities said the unidentified teen driver of a 2009 Infiniti G37 had two passengers, Hector Martinez, 18, of Toms River, and a second unidentified teen who was in the back seat of the car. The identities of the unnamed teens were withheld because they are juveniles.

They were headed east on Cedar Bridge Avenue "at a high rate of speed" when they came upon an unidentified vehicle in the left-turn lane that was trying to turn left on Clover Street, Billhimer said.

The teen driving the Infiniti tried to navigate around the vehicle turning left and in doing so lost control of the car, which left the road and hit the front of a building, then rolled over and came to rest on its roof and hood.

The teen in the back seat was thrown from the car and died at the scene, Billhimer said. That teen has been identified as a Lakewood School District student.

Martinez and the driver were taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for treatment, he said.

Lakewood School District officials said the district will be providing crisis counseling to students and families 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Friday in the gymnasium at Lakewood High School. Students or families who need assistance sooner should contact Community Liaison Anna Faone, officials said.

The Lakewood Schools also have requested assistance from School Base and the Traumatic Coalition for the Youth, officials said. Trauma response packets are being prepared with information on trauma and grief counseling services available both in and out of school, and will include release forms in the event the district needs to contact outside agencies or medical professionals on behalf of the student.

Billhimer said the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Vehicular Homicide Unit, Lakewood Township Police Department and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit are continuing to investigate the crash.
