New Proposal For Eagle Ridge Golf Course In Lakewood: Report

The report says the proposal includes 556 duplex homes plus basement apartments for the golf course.

LAKEWOOD, NJ — The Lakewood Planning Board is expected to hear a new proposal that would build 556 duplex homes at the Eagle Ridge Golf Course property, according to a report.

The proposal for development by GDMS Holdings is scheduled to go before the board on Feb. 5, the Asbury Park Press reported. The report said a traffic study for the proposed development also includes basement apartments, for more than 1,000 units at the development.

Development of the Eagle Ridge property has been highly controversial. Initial proposals were for more than 1,800 residences on the property, but the state Department of Environmental Protection denied permits under the Coastal Area Facilities Review Act for that proposal in 2017, citing a number of issues.

Residents from the area have vocally opposed proposals for the site of the golf course, which sits off Cross Street in Lakewood, not far from Route 9 and near both Toms River and Jackson. A CAFRA hearing at Jackson Memorial High School in April 2017 was packed with people opposing the project.

Since then, GDMS Holdings, which is looking to develop the property, and the DEP reached an agreement to reduce the proposal to 1,000 homes.

GDMS Holdings has named the community The Parke, and its website describes the potential development as "a walkable, self-contained community. This serene development offers an ideal place for families to live, work and play. Centered around existing natural preserves, The Parke minimizes environmental impact, encourages healthy living, protects open spaces and creates a strong and connected community."

The website, illustrated with artist renderings, notes the development is not yet under construction and is awaiting approvals. "The development as illustrated and described is subject to review and approval" by the township planning board and "other government agencies."

The Feb. 5 planning board hearing is at 6 p.m. at the municipal building.
