Academy Will Resume Sayreville Bus Service Through June

Breaking: After community outcry, Academy now announced they will extend Sayreville service to Midtown and Wall Street until June 30.

SAYREVILLE, NJ — Academy Bus Company has agreed to extend service for Sayreville until June 30, for their Midtown and Wall Street bus routes, the Sayreville police department announced Wednesday evening.

The back-and-forth on the Sayreville bus service has been a non-ending saga for local commuters: In late January, Academy announced in a Facebook post they would be ending the route as of March 2.

But then, after an outcry from commuters — and after state Sen. Josh Vitale got involved — they announced they would extend service to Midtown and Wall Street until March 29.

Today's news now extends the bus routes until the end of June.

In the Facebook post, Academy said ridership on those two bus routes has been steadily dwindling over the past five years.

But Sen. Vitale argues it was Academy itself that was responsible for the reduced ridership because they cut back on service in the Sayreville area.

"When you reduce the number of runs and you reduce the times that you can take those buses in and out, that's going to reduce ridership because people get frustrated," he said, according to MyCentralJersey. "They can't meet those times and those hard deadlines. They've reduced these routes and now they want to eliminate them entirely. We don't support that."
