Beloved MARSD Librarian Honored With Tree Planting

Aberdeen planted two trees outside Matawan-Aberdeen High School to celebrate the life of librarian Kathleen Eovino, who died this year.

ABERDEEN, NJ — On Thursday, Aberdeen Twp. planted two trees outside Matawan-Aberdeen Regional High School to celebrate the life of beloved local teacher Kathleen Eovino.

Eovino passed away on January 26 of this year, at the age of 74. She lived in Manasquan.

Eovino worked as a teacher and librarian in the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District for more then 38 years, having started her career there in 1972.

Eovino worked as a librarian in the Matawan-Aberdeen school district for 38 years and she actually met her husband in the district — it was 1972; she was a librarian and he was a math teacher; how cute is that?!

But Eovino's service went far beyond teaching and being a representative on the library board.

She was the advisor to the literary and art magazine, the chess coach, co-advisor of the National Honor Society, a member of the faculty advisory board, assistant Girl Scout leader with Troop 645, just to name a few.

“I worked with Kathleen for years; we all know she was the biggest advocate for the kids in this district," Deputy Mayor Martucci, who spent decades as the MARSD varsity football coach, said at Thursday's event. "She was a dear friend and a dedicated volunteer to our community. One day these trees will look down over the students in this school just like she did for so many years.”

In a 2011 ceremony, Eovino said it was the townspeople of Aberdeen who encouraged her to give back.

"This community has people who dedicate themselves and they care, just like the teachers that care about your kids," Eovino said in this 2011 ceremony, where she was awarded for her lifetime of service to the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional school district. "There are so many teachers who volunteer in Matawan ... I wouldn't have brought my daughter to Matawan if I didn't think she would get a good education."

On Thursday, the town planted two trees in her memory; the trees were donated by the Aberdeen Environmental and Shade Tree Advisory Board. Mayor Fred Tagliarini, Deputy Mayor Martucci, Councilwoman Montone and Councilwoman Kelley were present at the ceremony.
