Dog Kills Rabid Raccoon In Old Bridge Backyard

OLD BRIDGE, NJ — Someone's pet dog killed a rabid raccoon in a backyard in Old Bridge last week, the Middlesex County health department announced.
Old Bridge Animal Control responded to a private home in the area of Throckmorton Lane and Pensacola Street last Saturday, July 21. The homeowner told them their dog had just killed a raccoon.
The raccoon was sent to the New Jersey Department of Health Laboratory for testing and the results came back Monday that the animal tested positive for rabies. The homeowner and the dog were exposed to the raccoon.

The dog was up to date on his current rabies vaccination and was given a rabies vaccine booster.
The resident was notified to consult with their physician regarding rabies post-exposure treatment.

This is the eighth rabid animal reported within Middlesex County for 2018 and the first one with rabies in Old Bridge Twp.
