Haunted Matawan Walking Tours Return Oct. 26

Matawan has a rich history dating back to pre-Revolutionary War, with tales of piracy and bootlegging. Mount Pleasant Cemetery included.

MATAWAN, NJ — Matawan's Haunted History Tours return this October! We did one of these haunted tours two years ago and trust us, it was a lot of fun.

It's a nighttime guided walk throughout the streets of Matawan, and very knowledgeable local guides from the Matawan Historical Society tell you the haunted history of Matawan. The borough of Matawan has a rich history that dates back to before the Revolutionary War, and includes tales of piracy and rum running during Prohibition.

This year, the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society is also offering haunted tours of the Strauss Mansion, but all those tours are already sold out!

The Matawan tours will be on Saturday, October 26 this year and there will be four time slots. Tickets will be available during Matawan Day (Oct. 5) at the Historical Society Table in front of the Burrowes Mansion.

The walk includes chilling stories about some of the businesses and private homes along Main Street in historic Matawan. The evening begins with a short presentation at Burrowes Mansion, which will include stories about the ghosts of the mansion. According to tour guides, all of their ghost stories are 100 percent true! This year, the tour will also include parts of Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Spaces for these tours fill up quickly, so get your tickets when you can. The tours always conclude with doughnuts and hot apple cider at one of the "haunted" homes along the route.
