Matawan, Aberdeen Both Reschedule Fireworks to July 9

The towns made the call after thunderstorms and rain were in Friday's forecast.

MATAWAN, NJ — Fireworks to celebrate Independence Day in the borough and in neighboring Aberdeen Township have been postponed due to thunderstorms and rain.

The two towns made the announcement around noon. Both Matawan and Aberdeen will now hold their Fourth of July celebrations next Friday, July 9.

"It's with great regret that we must inform you that the Annual Independence Day Celebration is being postponed until Friday, July 9th. Unfortunately, the forecast for tonight calls for thunderstorms at some point during our celebration," Aberdeen Township wrote on its Facebook page. "With that being said, we will be back next Friday, bigger and better than ever!"

In Matawan, the celebration will begin at dusk at Ravine Drive Bridge and Lake Lefferts Park. The fireworks will be launched from the Matawan First Presbyterian Church, and the immediate area surrounding the church will be closed off to the public during the celebration.

In Aberdeen, the celebration will begin at 6 p.m. in Veterans Memorial Park. The event will feature a DJ, food vendors (including Cousins Maine Lobster), bouncy castles and other activities for children. Fireworks will begin at 9 p.m.

The township is providing trolley service starting at 5pm from the LA Fitness parking lot. The last trolley before the fireworks is at 8:30 p.m. After the fireworks the trolleys bring participants back and drop off in the LA Fitness parking lot.
