Matawan Gets $5.9 Million To Replace Aberdeen Rd. Bridge
The state Dept. of Transportation gave Matawan borough $5.9 million to replace the bridge on Aberdeen Road that goes over Matawan Creek.

MATAWAN, NJ — This week, the Murphy administration and state Department of Transportation announced that Matawan borough will be given $5.9 million to replace the bridge on Aberdeen Road that goes over Matawan Creek.
The bridge needs to be replaced because the road floods often, said Matawan town administrator Scott Carew. Part of the road will be raised as well "so it never floods again."
Matawan borough was given $5,910,287 from the state DOT. Aberdeen Road is a major road in Matawan and this is a total bridge replacement. It is unknown how this will affect traffic on Aberdeen Road.

The bridge replacement project will be led by Monmouth County and the county anticipates the work starting next spring. It will last about 18 months, said Carew.
Carew said the idea to replace the Aberdeen Road bridge has been in planning for more than a year.

"The need for this improvement stems from the fact that this section of Aberdeen Road floods often," said Carew. "This project will see the section of the road raised enough so that it never floods again."
In total, the NJ Dept. of Transportation gave out $47.3 million in 39 grants to towns across New Jersey, to help towns keep local bridges in a state of good repair. Some of the towns will simply make bridge repairs, but in Matawan this is a very big project to completely tear down the existing bridge and build a new one.
The Local Bridge Fund is a $47.3 million program funded through the Transportation Trust Fund.
The grants focus on the repair, reconstruction and replacement of bridges with the greatest structural deficiencies. Click here for a full list of county allotments and project awards.
