Matawan Regional Football Team Currently In Quarantine

The Matawan Huskies are quarantining due to a single positive COVID diagnosis on the team. They will miss the first two games of the season.

ABERDEEN, NJ — The entire football team at Matawan Regional High School is currently quarantining due to a single positive COVID diagnosis on the team.

Matawan Regional High School principal Aaron Eyler said he could not say whether it was a coach or a player who tested positive, but said the person started to feel ill on Sunday.

As a result, the team has suspended the first two weeks of the season, with no practice and no games. Additionally, no players on the football team will be in school for in-person classes for the next two weeks. The quarantine started Friday, Sept. 25 and will run through Oct. 9.

The Huskies will miss their first two games of the season, on Oct. 2 and Oct. 9.

"As you can imagine, the students are stressed and we are trying to be as supportive as we can at this time," said Eyler. He said they are having virtual team meetings.

The football team had been preparing to start the season, and they had a scrimmage with Colts Neck last Thursday, Sept. 24 and then a regular practice at the high school.

"This person was at practice on Friday, and became symptomatic on Monday," said the principal. "We did all the required contact tracing and as a professional courtesy, we contacted Colts Neck (High School) this morning just to give them a heads up so they can take care of their kids."

Football players will be back in class and back at practice Oct. 10.

A similar situation happened in Middletown this week, where someone on the football team tested positive. That person is quarantining, however both Middletown North and South football teams are still continuing to practice this week: Someone In Middletown South Football Program Positive For COVID, Practice Still On
