Police: Matawan Man Drove Getaway Car During Copper Theft in Keyport

He is facing charges for the alleged theft in Keyport.

A Matawan man is facing several charges after he allegedly drove a getaway car during a theft in Keyport. 

According to police, James Pitts, 46, allegedly conspired with other individuals to steal copper pipe and fittings from a property at 393 Broad Street. 

During the April 23 incident, fence surround the property, which also allegedly has a "No Trespassing" sign, was damaged, police said.

Pitts was charged with trespassing, theft, criminal mischief and conspiracy. According to the complaint warrant, a plastic straw with what police believe to be heroin was found on his person and he was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. 

In total, bail was set at $8,500 with a ten percent cash option.

Pitts was previously arrested in Matawan in January 2012 for allegedly breaking into a vehicle parked near the Matawan Terrace apartments in May 2011.
