NEW JERSEY — As 2018 comes to a close, it's a good time to think back on the highlights. Especially when those highlights involve food.

The folks at The Daily Meal website, who analyze all things related to dining and drinking, have been using their tastebuds all year to determine the best places to get everything from pretzels to pizza, and burritos to beer.

They've compiled their wisdom into the annual guide to the best food and drink across the country.

Many of these spots that offer up the tastiest eats across the United States are right here in New Jersey. The website's list of must-visit establishments in New Jersey features those that are among the nation's very best. You can use it as your 2019 culinary bucket list.

The website says New Jersey is called the Garden State for a reason: "Much of the state is lush and verdant."

"The state is home to 9,000 farms covering 720,000 acres, and food and agriculture is Jersey’s third-largest industry," according to the site. "Not only do New Jersey farms produce more than 100 kinds of fruits and vegetables, the state is also home to some great places to eat and drink."

So whether it's fine dining or street food you crave, here are some of the restaurants highlighted for having the best food and drink in the state:

  • Best Airport Restaurant: Classified (Newark Liberty International Airport)
  • Best Bar: McGovern’s Tavern (Newark)
  • Best Burger: White Manna in Hackensack, with its legendary sliders
  • Best 24 Hour Diner: Tick Tock Diner (Clifton)
  • Best Doughnuts: Uncle Dood’s in Toms River, with its creative toppings like vanilla frosting and Fruity Pebbles
  • Best Grocery Store: Kings
  • Best Sandwich: Atlantic City’s renowned White House Subs, and its famed Italian, with Genoa salami, provolone, ham, and capicola
  • Best Steakhouse: The River Palm Terrace, where all beef is USDA Prime and dry aged for 28 days
  • Best Sushi Bar: Jersey City’s Honshu, which has been serving high-quality fresh fish for over 10 years
