Dowd Says He's Finished As Coach Of Manasquan-Point Beach Ice Hockey Team

Former Brick Township High School star found not guilty of striking player with his foot in January.

Jim Dowd is stepping down as coach of the Manasquan-Point Pleasant Beach ice hockey team and will not return as coach next season, according to nj.com

Dowd - a former New Jersey Devils and Brick Township Hockey Star declined to comment on Tuesday on his reasons for leaving.

Dowd‘s only season with the team came under fire when a parent claimed that he struck a player with is foot during an incident on Jan. 7 at the Jersey Shore Arena in Wall.

Municipal Court Judge Joseph DeFino ruled in May that although Dowd had touched the 16-year-old player with his foot, he had not done so recklessly, purposely or knowingly.

Dowd, a 1987 graduate of Brick High School, scored 189 goals and had 186 assists in four years with the Dragons and was drafted by the Devils out of high school, according to a previous Patch story.

He chose instead to go to Lake Superior State in Michigan, where he led the Lakers to the 1987-88 NCAA championship, before moving on to a 17-year NHL career. His game-winning goal in Game 2 of the 1995 Stanley Cup Finals helped the Devils sweep the Detroit Red Wings.
