POINT PLEASANT BEACH, NJ – The borough of Point Pleasant Beach is looking for some seasonal help in the public works department now that the summer season is starting to get into gear.

The borough has had two openings for weekend litter patrol workers open for about three weeks with no applications. According to the borough website, the hours were from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and the pay rate was $24 an hour.

The lack of interest in the positions spurred a Facebook post from Point Pleasant Beach’s mayor Paul Kanitra on Tuesday evening lamenting the lack of applications.

“$24 an hour! That’s what we’ve been offering to pay for the last three weeks to pick up stray litter from the disrespectful visitors who leave it behind in our parking lots on the weekends. Unfortunately, with the unemployment dollars being doled out by Trenton, we’ve had zero applicants,” Kanitra posted on Tuesday evening.

Kanitra’s post went viral and got picked up by local media, and as of Thursday afternoon, the number of applicants has jumped up significantly.

“We were lucky enough to have the post go somewhat viral. We’ve had almost 50,000 views and now have received 50 applications and are in the process of filling the vacancies. It’s great to see some hardworking people willing to work!” Kanitra said to Patch.
