NJ Burger Named Among Nation's Best

The Daily Meal selected a burger in New Jersey among its list of the best in the U.S.

An immensely popular New Jersey burger joint was recently ranked among the best in the country, according to a new survey.

The Daily Meal's "The Best Burger in Every State" list included White Manna in Hackensack as the best in New Jersey. The New Jersey burger joint had already been declared by The Daily Meal and others as among the best America.

The Daily Meal noted that White Manna is a "New Jersey legend, one of the last remaining diner-style burger joints that arose in the tradition of White Castle."

"What’s served here is the perfect interpretation of that form, honed over decades and decades, unchanging," the publication said.

The publication noted the place's smallness, saying you only need to "walk up to the tiny counter, place your order with the grillman and watch as he smashes a small wad of meat onto the flattop with a handful of thin-sliced onions."

The grillman then "keeps careful track of it as it cooks, and sandwiches it into a Martin’s potato roll."

Thrillist's national burger critic, Wil Fulton, said recently that the burger can best be described as "ooey-gooey, absurdly juicy, retro burger heaven."

The burger joint in Bergen County is known for its small quarters, with barely enough room to fit one counter, as well as its retro-1950s diner look.

Fulton noted that "there's not a lot of room to sit inside the eternally packed, Paramount-manufactured diner. Nor is there ever much space to spare on the grill, as it's constantly packed with a pastiche of sizzling onions, balls of meat, and perfectly sized potato buns."

"This won't be the most comfortable dining experience of your life. You'll feel like you stepped back in time, and brought a crowd of 20 strangers with you along the way. But, you will have one of the best burgers of your lifetime. And isn't that worth any temporary suffering?" Thrillist wrote.
