POINT PLEASANT BORO – Cate Cucci says her sister has gotten "wonderful and kind people" to donate to a fund that allows people who can't afford a meal to get a half sub, a drink and chips.

The food is for people in dire need. "We don't want someone to take away a meal from a person who really needs it," Cate said. "This fund only runs on the kindness and graciousness of the community and funds are low."

The fund started earlier this year. Now the shop – featuring the St. Mary's Sub, along with other things cooked up by Stephanie "Petey" Cucci, the owner of Petey's US Subs – has served more than 700 local families when they couldn't afford a meal.

"Petey" still does it even though there is no money left for the service, her sister said.

"The business did not receive any federal or state funding, either," Cate said. "It's been a tough time family-wise as well, but there's always a smile behind the mask.

"We were born and raised here and we love our community."

Petey's was among several establishments nominated for Patch's "Business of the Year" in Point Pleasant Boro as many businesses continue to battle through the coronavirus pandemic.

But it was these businesses, the customers say, that also came through for others in need – even as they were struggling themselves.

Catrina, another friend/relative, said Petey's has the best prices delicious food, and "Petey knows the sign language that is easy for access for deaf people to communicate and order the food easier.

"Great food but Petey and the daily special are by far the best in town," said Charles Brosnan, a customer.

Another customer, Shawna, said the owners have really put in the effort and time "to make a customer's day.

"The best quality subs in town and the best customer service," she said.

Petey, who was born in Point Pleasant Beach and graduated from Point Pleasant Beach High School in 1999, wrote on Facebook earlier this year that she "couldn't be more proud of our community for coming together and helping each other in this crazy time."

"I wanted to let all those who donated or spread the word, how grateful the people/families are for all your donations," she said. "They can't say thank you enough."

Patch readers nominated a Local Businesses of the Year. The local businesses included retail stores, restaurants, hardware shops, dry cleaners, plumbers, car mechanics, salons and more.

Patch will feature nominated businesses in December.
