Rip Current Risk At The Shore This Weekend, Experts Warn

There is a "moderate" risk of rip currents along the shore this weekend, from Cape May to Sandy Hook, the National Weather Service said.

Experts are warning of an elevated threat of rip currents over the next few days. 

There is a “moderate” risk of rip currents along the shore this weekend, from Cape May to Sandy Hook, the National Weather Service said.

“A moderate risk of rip currents implies that individuals planning to enter the surf should check with local beach patrols first. Be sure to swim within sight of a life guard, and never swim alone or at night,” the NWS warns.

Jon Miller, a coastal process specialist with the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium, took to the airwaves Friday to warm beach goers that a storm moving over the Atlantic Ocean could cause dangerous rip currents this weekend.

According to Miller, rip currents are easy to spot but they are not always visible. Miller advises beach goers to swim near a lifeguard and avoid doing things in the ocean that you know you’re not capable of doing.
