The Astoria Pool Will Reopen On Monday After A Filter Setback
After a slight setback, the Astoria Pool is slated to open this upcoming Monday. The other 6 public pools in Queens will open on Saturday.
ASTORIA, QUEENS — After a slight setback, the Astoria Pool is slated to open this upcoming Monday.
The outdoor public pool, which is located in Astoria Park at 19th Street and 23rd Drive, was supposed to open for the summer on Saturday, but after some filter issues it is now scheduled to open on Monday June 28, according to a Parks Department spokesperson.
"Astoria Pool will experience a delayed opening while we work to address repairs to the filter plant. We apologize for the brief inconvenience to our young swimmers who we know are excited to make their first splash of the season, and we expect to open the pool by Monday, June 28," the spokesperson told Patch in a written statement.

The Astoria Pool is one of 53 outdoor pools throughout New York City — most of which will still open for the first time this season on Saturday June 26, according to the city’s Parks Department.
In a news release, NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, described the opening of outdoor pools as an "exciting step in our collective return to normalcy," adding that he is "thrilled to officially open outdoor pools for the season."

The city's public pools will be open through Sunday, September 12, according to the Parks Department.
Pool hours at Astoria’s olympic-sized swimming facility — which is the largest public pool in New York City — will be from 11:00 a.m. through 7:00 p.m. daily, with an hour-long break for pool cleaning between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Although the city’s public pools will be open this summer, the usual slate of summer programs — like free swim lessons and programs for people with disabilities — won’t take place as usual, since the pandemic hindered the city’s ability to hire and train lifeguards.
There will still be lifeguards on duty at the pools, and the pools will still have dispensers with free, broad-spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen, according to the Parks Department.
All you need in order to visit the Astoria Pool is a bathing suit and a combination lock if you want to lock up your belongings. The Parks Department also suggests leaving food, glass bottles, electronic devices, valuable items, and newspapers at home.
