Astoria's Bohemian Hall And Beer Garden To Reopen Wednesday

According to a Facebook post, the beer hall will reopen at 5 p.m. on May 18 for the first time since losing its liquor license last year.

ASTORIA, QUEENS — New York City's oldest beer garden will reopen its doors on Wednesday for the first time in over nine months, according to a social media post.

Astoria's Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden, which first opened in 1919, shuttered in August of last year after getting its liquor license suspended, but is planning to reopen once again at 5 p.m. on May 18, according to a post in its official Facebook group.

The post has garnered over 60 likes and been shared on other neighborhood forums by area locals, many of whom are eagerly anticipating its reopening.

“Best news all day,” wrote one, followed by another who said they’ll “be there.”

Some commenters, however, are more wary, following last year’s closure.

“Will believe it when I see those double doors opened,” wrote one, followed by several others who said that they can’t take another “heartbreak” after the garden and beer hall shuttered last summer.

Last August, Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden had its liquor license suspended after violating pandemic-related rules.

According to the findings of a state task force that monitors coronavirus-related rules, the beer garden was hosting maskless customers who were failing to practice proper social distancing, and had a group of 20 customers lined up for drinks in “flagrant violation” of an executive order that restricted large gatherings and restaurant and bar operations.

Since then, the beer hall paid a $20,000 penalty and had its liquor license reinstated.

Astorians have been anticipating Bohemian’s reopening for some time now, speculating as recently as last week that a meat delivery was an indication that the beer hall — known for its bratwurst, in addition to its beer — would be reopening soon.

A recent job posting looking for a server-slash-bartender to work at the beer hall further substantiates its reopening plans.

Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden did not immediately respond to Patch’s request for comment.
