Brewer For Astoria's SingleCut Beersmiths Dies Of Lung Cancer
Johan Andersson, a brewer at SingleCut Beersmiths, died Tuesday in Astoria. He was 52.

ASTORIA, QUEENS — Johan Andersson, a brewer at SingleCut Beersmiths in Astoria, died Tuesday of lung cancer. He was 52.
Andersson was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic lung cancer in September, when he went to the emergency room after feeling ill for several months, according to a GoFundMe page started by his daughter.
"About 6 weeks ago I admitted myself to the ER and a random x-ray snagged a picture a little higher up than intended and by accident revealed that I have cancer all tangled up inside," Andersson wrote in a Facebook fundraiser he started in November.

After the diagnosis, SingleCut launched the "No More Illusions" double dry hopped IPA in his honor, with proceeds going toward his fight against cancer.
Together, the Facebook and GoFundMe fundraisers have collected more than $28,000 as of Tuesday for Andersson's medical bills for chemotherapy and radiation treatments and hospice care.

Dan Bronson, general manager at SingleCut, called him "a man of a thousand stories."
"We're simply crushed. Johan was a friend to everyone who knew him- simply put, one of the most genuinely kind and thoughtful people to ever walk the streets of this neighborhood," Bronson told Patch. "Sharing a beer (and a shot) with him was always a highlight of many an Astorian's week. Though we knew this day was coming, it's still unbelievably saddening and shocking, as losing a friend and a true neighbor is."
