Free Concert Series In Astoria Park Extended Through August

Last month's popular concert series in Astoria Park has been extended through August, with performances on Thursday nights starting July 15.

ASTORIA, QUEENS — June's waterfront concert series at Astoria Park will get an encore this July and August.

The free weekly concert series, which kicked off last month at Astoria Park's Great Lawn, will resume next Thursday July 15 at 7:00 p.m., and continue at that time on Thursday's through August 5.

Three of the concert's four performers are tribute bands, including bands that play homage to ABBA, Ray Charles, and famous rock musicians. The Cab Calloway Orchestra, the event's final performance, is a band that pays homage to the original jazz group based out of the Cotton Club in Harlem, and is directed by one of the founders' grandsons.

Much like the waterfront movie series, the concerts are made possible by support from The Central Astoria Local Development Coalition, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and City Council Members Costa Constantinides and Jimmy Van Bramer, both of whom have represented Astoria and Long Island City.

Here's a list of all of the bands that will be performing at the park, starting on Thursday July 15:

The Central Astoria Local Development Coalition describes the four bands' musical genres as classic rock, pop, soul, and jazz/swing, respectively.

According to one of the group's fliers for the event, attendees should remember to bring a blanket or chair to sit on.
