BAY SHORE, NY - A 200 pound pig was rescued from "deplorable conditions" at a Bay Shore home last week, according to Frankie Floridia, President of Strong Island Animal Rescue

The Port Jefferson-based group received a call on Wednesday of a neglected pig.

"We handle all kinds of abandoned and abused animals on Long Island," he said.

The pig was acting aggressive and not willing to cooperate at first.

According to Floridia, there were signs the 3-year-old pig was severely neglected.

"Neglect is an understatement," he said. "For two and a half years of his life he had been in that room without ever being taken out."

The pig, named Maxwell, had only been eating scraps of food and Cheerios to eat.

He was also surrounded by his own urine and feces. For the past 2 and a half years he had not seen grass or sunlight.

"Pigs are very smart animals, they know when something is wrong and they are very clean animals," he said. "Despite what people think about them, they don't like to go to the bathroom in their own area and this pig was forced to."

Maxwell was apparently mistaken for a mini pig before growing to 3 and half feet wide and 200 pounds.

He has now been seen by a vet and is being socialized before being put up for adoption.

The ideal home for him would be a nice farm with plenty of space.

"They need a nice area just to roam and they need a lot of attention and lots of love," Floridia said.

For those who do want to adopt, can contact the Strong Island Animal Rescue through their Facebook page.
